This year's motto for Juneteenth is "one city, one team, one economic impact," said Kimeka Campbell, founder of Young Professionals of Color and an organizer of a series of Juneteenth events in the region this year. Economics, she said, plays a critical role in the Juneteenth conversation and, indeed, in the greater racial and economic justice conversation.
Each year Juneteenth HBG has been a point of growth and innovation as we navigate how best to observe Juneteenth and enrich the community. Thanks to each gift from our sponsors and the community, the Juneteenth HBG Collaborative was able to pull off an amazing time of fellowship, learning, and celebration not seen before in the history of our city and region. With over 3000 event participants served between May and June, we are deeply humbled and thankful to have facilitated such an amazing series of events. We thank you, and we know residents and visitors to the city and region are so grateful for your involvement and partnership in Juneteenth HBG.
It’s important to note here that Juneteenth HBG is what our communities look, feel, and sound like. Our communities look vibrant and full of life as residents and visitors get to have fun and realize some of their dreams. Our communities feel like collaboration, support, fulfillment, and a soft place to land as we achieve big dreams and build rapport across organizations. Our communities sound like the beautiful singing, eclectic music, boisterous laughter, joyful greetings, encouraging sermons, and poignant orations that we experienced throughout this Juneteenth HBG season. And YOU are a significant part of our community! All these elements lift our community and help us shape what we want for the future of the Capital Region.
